St. Andrew's Church Job Description

The intern at St. Andrew’s Church promotes the mission and ministry of the church as the office and ministry assistant.  Responsibilities include producing weekly worship bulletins, managing all communication aspects of the church, maintaining records, coordinating volunteers, assisting in the production of the newsletter, maintaining the website, providing phone and email coverage, and coordinating buildings and grounds usage. The intern also has primary responsibility for all requests from individuals who call or visit the office seeking assistance.  The intern listens to and assesses the needs on a case-by-case basis, making recommendations for the use of resources available through the church and making appropriate referrals in the community. The intern may also volunteer at the weekly meal to neighbors who are homeless which is hosted by the Oregon Hill Baptist Center.  The intern works closely with the rector, Abbott Bailey, in many aspects of the day-to-day operations of the church and coordinates regularly with the vestry leadership and commission chairs.

Depending on the intern’s interests, there are opportunities for involvement in pastoral care (visiting those who are sick or homebound); planning and leading special worship services; and worship leadership by serving as chalice bearer, acolyte, nursery volunteer, or children’s ministry assistant.

Skills: The intern must possess excellent organizational and communication skills, including proficiency with social media, Microsoft Office, and database and website management (Mac platform). The ideal intern will have the ability to communicate easily with many different people and manage simultaneous tasks efficiently. Flexibility, a commitment to confidence, and a good sense of humor are especially helpful and important.

This position is particularly (though not exclusively) suited to someone who is interested in exploring a vocation in lay or ordained church leadership, and in appropriate cases, may also participate in the Young Priest Initiative of the Diocese of Virginia.
