About Vestry Service

The vestry is the governing body of an Episcopal church. Its roles and responsibilities are outlined in the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, some of which are described below. St. Andrew’s is currently led by a vestry consisting of 8 members, including the parish priest, who serves as chair. New members are elected each year to serve a 3-year term. The treasurer provides financial oversight and guidance to the vestry but is not a voting member. The officers of the vestry include the senior warden, junior warden, and register. Vestries are considered full partners with their clergy in the leadership of the church.

Criteria for Vestry Eligibility:
• Individuals must be “confirmed adult communicants in good standing of the church”:
1. At least 16 years of age
2. A baptized person who has been confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church
3. Has received Holy Eucharist in this church at least three times during the preceding year
4. Has been faithful in corporate worship in this parish during the preceding year, except for good cause
5. Is known to the treasurer or rector to have made an identifiable financial contribution in support of the parish and its ministries during the preceding year

Expectations for Vestry Members at St. Andrew’s:
• Properly support the clergy and the programs of the church through service and stewardship
• Serve as a liaison to at least one standing ministry of the church
• Attend monthly vestry meetings on a regular basis
• Attend the annual vestry orientation retreat on a Saturday in February
• Participate regularly in Sunday worship, including serving as “Vestry Person of the Day,” in rotation, to assist the clergy, staff and other parishioners as needed
• Make an annual financial pledge to St. Andrew’s
• Make a commitment to follow Christ and grow spiritually, protect your wellness, and participate in the leadership of the parish
